The Perils of Oncall As A Dentist 牙医之ONCALL36

Most of the people are unaware that we dentists have to take up oncalls like the medical doctors do.
'Dr malam cabut gigi jugak ke?'  'So Dr, do you pull out the teeth at night also?'
The answer is usually no, we take up calls for emergency cases instead. We have a speciality named as Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and yes, basically we take care of your face + mouth. If a person is involved in an accident and sustains cuts on the face, we are the first-line to review. (after the A&E personnel of course.)

Well, dentists are also known as Doctor,  ENgineer and arTIST. Our 'artistic' duty includes suturing the torn face specifically on the lips and inside the mouth. Sometimes if the injury is extensive like facial bone fracture which is pretty common in accident cases, we have to manage it by fixing wires on your teeth. Yala, ahbo how to eat if your jaws are fractured and your teeth all lari already?

Alright that's all for the intro. Now I would like to share something regarding the 'hazards' that we frequently face.

The risk of getting infected is high for us as obviously it's because of our working environment. We are exposed to all kinds of bacteria, virus etc etc. We shall skip this part as this is generally known.

Another thing that I'd like to highlight is our EQ is challenged at all times. I guess my EQ is pretty high now - 'well trained'. Frankly, we get scolded very often by some ignorant patients/ family members when they refuse our treatment or when they require something else. Yes, patient could sign a refusal letter if he insists but at our stance, our duty is to persuade the patient to accept the treatment and that is the gist of the management to be honest.

For instance, I nearly got assaulted by a middle age lady recently that she rejected our treatment and was fed up to listen to my advice, and raised her fist ultimately to me. It was harsh and I was stunned. However, I managed to console her and made her accept the treatment eventually. FYI, that patient was fit and healthy but highly uncooperative initially.

In a nut shell, we have to deal with all kinds of patients while we sacrifice ourselves (skip meals, lack of sleeps and even toilet break) as it is a commitment. Somehow, we just hope to see our patients with a happy bright smile after the treatment. It touches our hearts when the patients bid goodbye with thankful gestures. We don't ask for much and we are always ready to lend our helping hands but please do respect us.

Alright enough of grouses, it's just some random food for thought. Goodnight.
