Lingua Gustatio: The Cafe @ Georgetown City Hotel

The Georgetown City Hotel, Penang, formerly known as Berjaya Penang Hotel, is a 4-star hotel managed by One Network Hotel Management Sdn Bhd. It is strategically situated in the heart of Penang, the food hub of Malaysia. Being part of the '1-Stop Midlands Park' business and entertainment complex, it provides many shopping, leisure and entertainment opportunities.

Well, 1-Stop has been a great hangout spot during my high school days. My girlfriends and I walked there after school for food or sometimes games (the amusement machine like basketball, dancing and the popular car racing) or as a pathway to go to Gurney Plaza. Eh, I'm not saying we lepak there everyday la.. It's just once in a blue moon like after exams, birthday dates etc. I'm still a very obedient school girl. xD

Okay, back to the topic of the day. The Cafe is a certified halal restaurant in Georgetown City Hotel. It serves both international and local delicacies including Penang famous cuisine like ais kacang, pasembor etc.

Upon arriving at the grand entrance, you would see the classic and elegant sign of Georgetown City Hotel.

The Cafe is easily spotted as it is situated right next to the hotel lobby.

The Cafe could accommodate around 150 pax in total. Yes, you can throw a party here if you wish. =D

Tonight's theme is Oriental Buffet with Teochew Porridge which is exclusively available on Friday nights. Bring your family around as the buffet price is only RM31 nett and for senior citizens (>55 years old) & children (4-12 years old), the price is RM25 nett.
Check the other buffet prices and promo at the end of the post!

The first section that caught my attention was this. Deliciously marinated fish and all sorts of greens are waited to be served. The chef beside would stir-fry all your picks to suit your taste.

Prawns with Chillies Sauce
Despite having dipped in the strong chilli paste, the freshness of prawn does last still. The chillies spiciness may not be challenging but I love the mixture of all different spices especially the fragrant lemongrass.

Ayam Masak Kicap
This typical local dish is actually an everyone's pick. The poultry was well cooked
as it was really soft, juicy and enriched with the soy sauce.

Tamarind Lamb Chop
I am a big fan of tamarind but I have not tried it seasoned with lamb pieces. To my surprise, they actually match to my taste and also the tenderness of the lamb remains still.

Braised Boey Chai
Boey Chai, a sort of dried pickle used mostly in Chinese cuisine especially in stewed dishes. As for this, the flavour is just fine and goes well with white rice as most Asians do!

Savoury Omelette
This is another popular dish suitable for kids as well as adults. This fluffy beaten eggs fare pretty well together with the various ingredients like onions and chillies.

Seasonal Vegetables
Multicoloured vege look equally alluring as we have lovely lil trees (broccoli), abalone mushrooms,
carrots as well as anti-cholesterol agents - cloud ear fungi.

Tofu with Tau See Fish
Initially, I was expecting a stronger Tau See (soybean paste) aroma but it
turned out to be just fine and matched with tofu well.

Stir fried vege in garlic sauce
This vege is the one we hand picked at the first section. It just tastes like homecooked food to me. =)

Ikan Goreng Berempah
Well, the fish was crispy indeed but honestly, it fares mediocre to me compared to the tilapia fish below.

Thumbs up for this fresh fried talapia that is utterly crisp externally and yet succulent within.

Porridge is the next staple in oriental cuisine after rice. Thus, this is one of the must-haves as well.
A. Sweet potatoes porridge

B. Oyster porridge

Besides, if you wish to enhance the flavour of porridge, you could add any favourite condiments above. As for me, I always feel century egg goes the best with porridge.

Thai Laksa is made by adding coconut milk specifically to build up the richness of the soup.
Personally, I find it very aromatic but less spicy and diluted. Perhaps, I should add more bird's eye chillies myself for my next visit.

Slurps~

Oh yes, you can indulge in the local Penang pasembor here! Beancurds, bean sprouts, cucumbers are all main ingredients for pasembor and also,
remember to dip all of them in this unique sweet and spicy sauce.

Here comes the salad section. Personally I love this cheese pasta salad as it is basically full of cheeseeeee (fattening but still yummy) and also the spaghetti is finely cooked, not limp or soggy.

This potato salad was rather plain compared to the cheese pasta salad above. I think perhaps the chunks of raw onions could be cut into smaller pieces to make them more palatable.

Ta-daaa, time for DESSERTS!!

Ais Kacang
This is the traditional Malaysian dessert with red beans, peanuts, grass jelly served with shaved ice mountain topped with rose syrup. Spot the traditional ice shaving machine beside? Yes, the ice is instantly churned out and ready to be served in 2 minutes.

Cute looking sponge cakes are pretty tempting.

Jelly cheesecakes are available too.

Since this is Oriental themed, nyonya kuihs are indeed significant. The yellow one is tapioca cake and the colourful layered cake is actually my childhood favourite dessert. I would peel it layer by layer and consume it. Anyone doing the same too? lol.

Fancy some adorable fruit tarts? =D

Longan sweet soup
Another appetizing, appealing and cooling dessert is up for grabs.

For a balanced diet, you ought to have fruits in your meal! Here are our tropical fruits which are really sweet and nectarous.

Ice Cream, Ice Cream~ (playing Hyuna's song, Ice Cream)
